In 1899 there were no motor cars in Accrington. All the children walked to school!
Any coal or parcels were delivered to the school by horse and cart.

There were steam trams and trains in town but they did not run up the steep hills like Willows Lane or Ormerod Street.

Motor cars and busses became more common after the First World War (1914 - 1918) and the children were soon going on school trips on them.
