This was in case the enemy attacked with poisonous gas.  The children were asked to bring in their gas masks and were shown how to fit and use them.

Mr. Spencer, head teacher, wrote in the school logbook:

August 29th “In view of the gravity of the International situation the children brought their gas masks for adjustment and respirator drill…”
