During the Second World War (1939 - 1945) all the pupils at Spring Hill had to practice wearing their gas masks.

This was in case the enemy attacked with poisonous gas. The children were asked to bring in their gas masks and were shown how to fit and use them.
Mr. Spencer, head teacher, wrote in the school logbook:
