In 1927 there was a total eclipse of the sun in Britain as there has been this year.

There was a 100% eclipse in Lancashire but it was at 6:30 in the morning!  The headmaster at Spring Hill, Mr Barrett, arranged for the older children to leave from school in a charabanc (coach) at 4:30 in the morning and go to Waddington fells, near Clitheroe, to see the eclipse better.

This is his entry in the school logbook:

1927

June 29th “School closed…Solar eclipse at 6.23am…A party of the senior scholars left school at 4.30am by charabanc for Waddington Fells.  The junior scholars left at 5.30am for high ground near school….”
