In those days the children did not have entertainments as we have today.  There were no cinemas.  Radio and Television were not yet invented and computers were unheard of.

Mr. Watts knew that the circus was one of the highlights of a child's year in 1902.  He wrote in the school logbook:

March 14th “Sanger’s circus is coming to town next Wednesday…Have made arrangements for the children to see the procession at dinnertime…”
March 19th “School holiday as the circus is in town….”
